Blazing Snowfield I and II

Here in Colorado, we have had a major snowfall in the past two days.  It is truly a winter wonderland as I gaze outside my studio windows.  I was inspired to finish these two miniatures that I started several weeks ago (before getting sidetracked with spring florals).

Although we are expecting snow tomorrow, Spring is in my heart and I had to paint a lose rendition of bursting color with soft and hard edges to depect a Spring Bouquet!

I had the pleasure of meeting these wonderful "red eared sliders" at Bath Gardens and just had to capture their relationship with one another as they relaxed on the slate slabs and enjoyed the misty waterfalls.

Exercise from Thomas Schaller Workshop -stepping stones in pond

This painting was done as 22x15 exercise in the Thomas Schaller Workshop....which was absolutely excellent!!!    Tom demonstrated his approach to his painting, working from one of his photographs, and value sketches......   the participants were then asked to replicate the subject, composition and approach.  Of course, I did not "replicate" his beautiful painting, but certainly learned a lot from the exercise!  If you have a chance, please visit his website:  www.ThomasSchaller.com.

Private Collection Watercolor Figurative Monochromatic Study by Janis Goldblatt, measuring 11x8 image on Arches 140lb cold press..  Inspired by Celia and Michael, dear sister-in-law and dear brother, respectively.  Painted on a cold day in Colorado.....the setting creates a longing for me to be somewhere sunny and warm... like on Lake Champlain in the summer!

Winter Scene III

Winter landscape original watercolor by Janis Goldblatt.  5x7.  Foothills Art Center had an artist demonstration day on Dec 1, and I did a series of watercolor paintings depicting winter scenes.  This is one of several that I demonstrated.  It was a fun day with many visitors to the center, and I enjoyed talking with all who stopped to observe and ask questions!

Winter Trees

Autumn Harvest

I am pleased to report that this painting received First Place Award in advanced watercolor still life at the 50th Fall Arts Festival in Glenwood Springs.  It was a glorious weekend with great art, great autumn color, great people and great relaxation time in the Hot Springs!

Evergreens

Blue Mist

This painting came to me several evenings ago when I could not sleep. 

 

I used a very limited palette of cobalt blue, indigo and avignon orange.  Comprised mainly of 3 values with a lose rendering of shapes, allows  the viewer to fill-in "details" and appreciate a "mood".  The simplicity helps to make this painting "work".

I long to be by the water.

High Country Scene

This painting sold at Cafe Vino in the auction fund raising event for the high park fire. I was glad to make a contribution in appreciation for all the fire fighters' honorable and amazing efforts. The money raised will go to those who unfortunately, lost their homes.

 This national show by the Mountainside Art Guild features over 100 two-dimensional paintings—all 35 square inches or smaller. This year’s juror, Terry Gardner, studied fine art, marketing and communications at Maryvale University in St. Louis, and subsequently at The Art Students League in Denver under teachers Quang Ho and Mark Daily. Gardner has exhibited across the nation, received numerous honors, and appeared in Southwest Art magazine.

ATC Winter Series I

Here is another of my ATC winter series original watercolor landscapes.  I wanted to back light the evergreens and let them melt into the horizon while illuminating the snowfield and capturing a hint of cast shadows from the forground grasses and bush.

I created a series of ATC's last spring after we had a late winter/early spring snowfall.  ATC stands for artist trading card and the group of watercolorists that I paint with  had an Artist Trading Card get together.  After a delightful morning of painting, we traded cards with one another.  There were about 11 of us, and these are just four of the over 15 cards I created.  They measure 2.5x3.5 and it is a great way to shre each other's work with one another while adding to our personal art collections!

Years ago I traveled to Nova Scotia, and was allured by the water, mist, buildings and rugged lifestyle. Recently, I revisted a black and white photo that I took, was inspired to paint, and added color and atmosphere. 
This is one of three paintings that has been juried into the Mountainside Miniature Show at Foothills Art Center.

Outdoor Steps II

Outdoor Steps II - watercolor landscape on yupo by Janis Goldblatt measuring 19 x 12.5,image.  This painting was inspired by the Opera House in Central City, Colorado.  Yupo is a very unique surface that does not absorb water and pigment; rather the pigment-mixture (puddles of water) "sit" on the surface; the water evaporates and the pigment adheres to the surface, resulting in brilliant, pure color which produces a different effect.

High Country Lake Scene

Sold.  This painting, which has been juried into several exhibits this past year, recently sold at The Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colorado.  I will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Rist Canyon Fire department.  The beautiful Colorado landscape along the Poudre River and unfortunately, in other areas of Colorado, will never be the same.  Hundreds of homes have been destroyed and thousands of families have been evacuated.  Let us all be generous in our efforts to provide support, however we may be able to do so!
